The Kitchen Appliance Store buyers guide to built in appliances

Built in appliances are designed to fit into your kitchen units but remain visible. Integrated appliances require a furniture door to match your kitchen and, with the exception of semi integrated models with a visible control panel, will be completely hidden.

Avoid common ordering and installation errors

  • Make sure you understand the difference between built in and built under.
  • There is a range of double ovens to fit under your worktop that cannot be fitted at eye level.
  • There is a range of double ovens to fit in a tall housing at eye level that cannot be fitted under your worktop
  • Do you need built in or built under? Make sure you know the difference.
  • “Built Under” integrated fridge or freezer cannot be built into a tall unit.
  • “Built in” integrated fridge or freezer cannot be built under your worktop.
  • A standard size built in microwave will fit into a tall or base housing but not a wall unit.
  • All built in microwaves are not always the same height or depth.
  • You cannot “build in” a freestanding microwave - or any other freestanding appliance for that matter.

Ovens - "Built in" or "built under"?

built in oven   built under oven   There is often confusion about the terms built in and built under. Ovens are either built under or built in. Unfortunately though, a built under oven can also be described as built in! This is because it is designed to fit under a worktop, but people think of it as being built in to their kitchen. It is confusing to say the least!

The most important things to remember are that a 900mm eye level double oven cannot be fitted under your worktop. A 720mm high built under double oven cannot be fitted at eye level and does not require a housing unit. Single ovens can be fitted in a housing at eye level or under your worktop.
Both types of installation are shown here.
